About today’s guest Alex Benson:
My name is Alex Benson, I grew up in Vermont in what I would say is a pretty “normal” life. My parents were married and still are, I went to school, got good grades, had the normal fights with my brother that all brothers do, and played sports through high school and lived your average American childhood.
However, unlike most kids who come out of high school and head to college with a mission for changing the world or at least the slightest of direction, I came out of high school having no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I had passions, I had intentions, but I lacked direction. I ended up attending Springfield college in Massachusetts more by force than by choice and scrambled around between majors. By the end of my four years I had managed to complete two bachelors degrees, one in English and another in Communications, but still had no idea what I was actually going to do with my life once I left that campus.
There were projected ideas onto what I should be doing from my parents, none of which lead to a driving passion for me. Not long after I ended up married, with a baby on the way, working three jobs, and still not fulfilled in my life, still struggling to figure out my purpose. My marriage fell apart, I ended up back at my parents home in my late 20’s with my little girl and had to start over again. It was a very low period in my life where I knew I had to make changes, I had to find my purpose, my passions or I would be forever living in this space of emptiness and a feeling of failure.
Through the three years I was back home I began to really work on me as an individual. I began teaching as a para-educator for special needs children, worked on my health and fitness losing 60 lbs., and began my journey to becoming a firefighter. I began to surround myself with people who thought on a different level, had passions, had focus, and had a vision for their future and I began to work on my mind more than my job.
That is where the evolution of my life began.
Through this process of my life falling apart, it somehow began to fall into place. I met my now wife, Lela, and we currently have four kids together.
You see the thing is, if I had not gone through the struggles I did and made a decision to embrace the lows, celebrate the highs, and learn along the journey I would not be where I am today. I had to take ownership for the things in my life that were lacking, I had to learn what it meant to truly become a man of God, what it meant to be a committed husband and father. Through this process I have found my passion, to contribute to the world a message of what it means to be a 7 mile man, to inspire others to keep going, to keep evolving, to keep seeking the truth, to continue to be of service in all areas of their life. Let’s join together as men to learn what it means to truly become a 7 mile man.
